A Sad Week

Dear Boys,

It has been a hard week for me. Donald Trump was elected the 45th President of the United States. He was elected on the basis of fear and anger. Many of his supporters are average Americans who felt they were not represented in our government, many feel they are entitled to something, and many are tired of the politics as usual. I understand a lot of what they are going through, but there is a disturbing element to his supporters. Leading up to the election he said many things to incite many of his supporters to say and do things that are not acceptable to my way of life. He made campaign promises to reverse laws and policies that support women’s and LGBTQ rights; to round up millions of people to deport them; and to get rid of the Affordable Care Act. There are so many other things that he said that I don’t agree with that you will learn about or by the time you read this you will have learned. Mr. Trump got elected by playing to the racism, sexism, homophobia, and extreme nationalism that exists in our society. These are the aspects of our world that we must be aware of in order to fight against them. We must fight against them by standing up people who need our help, by giving back to our community, and by voting. These actions must be taken to ensure that someone like Donald Trump does not get elected again — that someone like him doesn’t even come into existence because if we are being thoughtful, inclusive, and good then there is no need for his type of representation in our government. Hopefully four years from now there will be another post to this journal that is about a more positive vision of our future. Until then we fight!

An Ant Production

I certainly learned a whole lot about ants on this day. Who knew there were green ants in the world. Ms. Hajeck’s 2nd grade class knew. That’s who. Yes. That’s you, the green ant, marching and singing around the queen ant. You did a great job on this unit. Learning about ants was so interesting to you that you made an outline drawing on your own—not for any homework. Just to draw. You brought it in to show your teacher and she made copies for all your classmates. On the day of the ant production your drawing colored by all your classmates lined the hallway from the main office leading all the way down to your classroom.

christmas 2008

we flew out of Tampa on Christmas Day to San Francisco, CA. we drove down to Sant Cruz to spend a few days with mom’s family. nonna and poppa also came from New York. you did great on the plane. you only cried a little during the take-offs and landings. you and jack were sound asleep when we arrived in Santa Cruz. uncle sean had arrange for your very own pack-n-play for your visit. just like the one you have at home. everybody was excited to see your new developments. lots happens in the first year of life and you are progressing nicely. lots of sounds and physical communication and the walking is crazy. man are you fast.

after a few days in the small beach town we headed north to San Francisco for a couple of days before flying home to Sarasota. again we went to a playground in golden gate park, walked around haight street, and rode on an orange trolley.

you never did quite adjust to the time change. well, we’re back on the east coast so get some sleep.

fay

fay who. tropical storm fay. we’ve had pretty good weather as far as the hurricane season (summer) is concerned. on monday tropical storm fay made it’s way to florida and we decided to pack up the car and drive to ocala to stay at grammy and gramp’s house. you, mom, and i picked jack up at janelle’s and headed out of sarasota. you enjoyed the car ride napping and watching jack make funny faces trying to get you to laugh. the next day we went to the pool to get a wireless internet connection to check on the status of the storm since gramp’s satellite tv was off for the summer. mom checked email and dad checked the weather. we decided to head home after lunch. you, mom and jack slept most of the way home. we made it back home safely to find no damage to the house and went about our normal evening. goodbye fay.
